Is your skin's pH imbalanced?

Did you know that? To have perfect skin, you must use products that respect the pH of your skin.

But what is it about?

The initials pH correspond to “hydrogen potential” and are used to measure the acidity level of a physical environment.

A pH of 7 is neutral. Below 7, the pH is acidic, above it it is basic or alkaline.

Our skin is covered with a protective hydrolipidic film whose ideal pH is on average around 4.5-5.5. It is this natural acidity that allows the film to eliminate bad bacteria that could irritate or infect the skin. Concretely,

  • dry skin has a pH closer to 4;
  • oily skin is around 6-6.5.

Ideally so as not to irritate the epidermis, it is advisable to use slightly acidic cosmetics. This acidity promotes the development of the skin microbiota (all the micro-organisms which help our body to function well and defend itself ) and makes the skin inhospitable to pathogenic germs.

Why is skin pH imbalanced?

The skin changes due to several factors such as age, hormonal changes, environment, stress, use of unsuitable care, diet…

We are often told: “we are what we eat”. And it also works for our skin! Yes, let's not forget that the skin is an organ like any other and therefore draws energy from the nutrients we provide it.

The skin is the largest organ in the human body (it measures almost 2 m2). Thus, it protects us from external aggressions and allows us to regulate our temperature.

To function properly, it therefore needs to draw energy from the heart of our body to constantly renew itself. The more good nutrients you give your body, the more your skin will use them to recharge its batteries and therefore glow a little more!

When there is an imbalance in the pH of the skin, we can end up with irritations, redness, spots, etc.

If you consume products that are too acidic such as dairy products, tobacco, alcohol, sodas or cold meats, inadequate hygiene care, you deteriorate your pH.

In response, your skin produces more sebum, becomes even more basic to combat acidity and will become oilier with imperfections (pimples, blackheads, etc.). It’s the same pattern with beauty products that are too greasy or too stripping.

How to maintain the pH of your skin balanced and with which cosmetic products?

By implementing simple routines, you will be able to preserve the pH of the skin.

To start, we adapt our products:

*If your skin feels tight or red, use oily creams that have a slightly alkaline pH. They are therefore recommended for dry skin. They artificially restore the sebum and hydration they lack.

*Is it greasy and shiny after a few hours? Prefer products with a pH ranging from 4.5 to 5 to rebalance it. For example, creams devoid of fatty agents, with a slightly acidic pH, which rebalances the pH of oily skin and whose role is only to provide the skin with moisturizing agents.

Most soaps are alkaline, that is to say they have a basic pH between 8 and 11. However, the pH of the skin is slightly acidic as mentioned above. They clean “but a little too much.”

To respect the protective upper layer of our skin, it is therefore necessary to use soaps with a rather neutral pH (close to 7), this is the case for “soap-free” soaps or shower gels.

*For more specific cases such as eczema, acne, etc., we will adapt the type of soap used.

The golden rule: “listen to your skin”, a bit like humans, the skin expresses its state of mind! It is therefore important to observe your skin in a mirror (already to remind yourself that you are the most beautiful) and to identify its changes and thus know which products to turn to!

In any case, remember to moisturize your skin, whatever its type. Also, the epidermis of the legs is not the same as that of the armpits or face. We will notice that the less exposed areas have retained their natural acidity and the skin there is perfect. It will therefore be necessary to adjust the product according to the part of the body .
